Cuticle: epidermis nonliving, noncellular outer layer of an organism secreted by the underlying. Consists of outer epicuticle and inner procuticle of chitin and protein. Strengthened by chemically cross-linked proteins or embedded calcium salts. Muscle bands stretch across joints in the tubular skeleton these joints can only bend in one direction, they have flexible cuticle. Uniramous: branched and y-shaped arrange in a linear sequence. Nervous system is a paired ventral nerve cord with a series of ganglia that correspond to each segment of the body. Simple eyes: a lens can change shape or position to focus light eyespot, ocellus consists of photoreceptive cells positioned under consists of many ommatidia (basic unit that is grouped together) Breathe across gills, book lungs, or spiracles. Complete digestive tract foregut and hindgut are both lined with cuticle. Excretory organs: antennal glands, coxal glands, malpighian tubules. Three classes within the phylum merostomata, pycnogonida, arachnida.
