Much research provides knowledge about people, but this knowledge is often somewhat abstract and gained by studying people in experiments and other controlled situations. Participant observation is different; it is a qualitative research technique that provides the opportunity to study people in real-life situations. Form of field research observations are carried out in real settings and where there is a lack of kind of control and structure you have in experiments. In participant observation, researchers become involved in some group or organization or entity that they are studying. The researchers have to balance two roles: o! Researchers have to avoid going native becoming so identified with the group that they lose their objectivity. The researcher participates with the group being observed and is a functioning part of the group. The observer is a neutral outsider who has been given the privilege of participating for the purpose of making observations and recording.
