First humans to speak language lived in east africa 150,000 years ago. Can tell this because they found a modern shaped hyoid bone in a skull, which is the structure needed to speak. We also eventually grew to stand and walk upright, which allowed for physical changes in the anatomy of our throat, lungs, larynx, etc. allowing for the ability to speak (no other animals can do that) Verbal communication= the way we use words to generate meaning. All languages arrange words so that they can make sense by using grammar. Well chosen words are crucial so effective communication in the workplace and in one"s career. Words do not have meaning, people have meanings for words (single words may have multiple meanings in a dictionary) Signs: often look like what it represents (the weather network symbols for lighting or rain) Symbols do not have a direct relationship with what they represent (ie the word lightning doesn"t look like lightning)
