Chapter 3 adapting to canada"s changing faces. 20 years ago, only 1 in 5 canadian workers were born in other countries: projected that in 2031 this will rise to 1 in 3 workers. 1996 1 in 10 were from a visible minority: 2031 it is projected that this will be 1 in 3. Words such as nationality, race, ethnicity are often used synonymously with the term culture. Culture is more than a country of origin, race, or ancestral heritage. Culture: a learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, and norms which affect the behaviours of a relatively large group of people. Within cultures there are members of co-cultures: coexist within the mainstream society yet remain connected to one another through their cultural heritage, ex. Asian canadian, arab canadian, irish canadian are part of co-cultures as well as members of large and small religious groups.
