Second half the 19th century condemned abortion saying it was selfish, immoral, and shirking responsibilities of motherhood. Legislation restricting abortion and contraceptive use continued: turn of the century abortion and contraceptive was illegal. A woman who was sick because of a blotched abortion has to testify against her husband or doctor before she could receive medical care. 20th century climate of fear prevailed.
