Paternalistic physician is regarded as parent and the patient as a child. Opponents of this belief just use another metaphor to explain their point; physician as partner or the patient as the rational contractor. Physician-patient conflict when different views are used by both. Physician follows a paternalistic approach and patient prefers a contractual model. Metaphors highlight some features and hide other features of their principal subject. For example; physician as parent = care for dependent people and control over them but hides payment of fees. Metaphors describe relationships or indicate how it should be. Adequacy of metaphors can be found by analysing the highlighting and hiding of features. 5 different metaphors being analyzed: parent-child, partners, rational contractors, friends, technician- client. Primary decision-maker = health care professional, mainly physician has moral authority. Doctor"s tell you what to do but it"s up to you to decide if you want obey or refuse to comply.
