Efferent neurons have an oval cell body and the efferent neuron is connected to a single, long axon and several shorter dendritic projections form the cell body. Influences smooth muscles, glands and the heart through the two divisions, sympathetic and parasympathetic. Hypothalamus, brain stem and spinal cord are the hub of the neural output of the ans. Motor and premotor cortex adjust much of the output from the ans. Integration of those inputs of sight, smell, hearing and somatosensory information is integrated in the hypothalamus. Each autonomic nerve pathway extending form the cns to an innervated organ is a two-neuron chain. Cell body of the first neuron in the series is located in the cns. Sympathetic nerve fiber originate in the thoracic and lumbar regions o the. Sympathetic nerve fiber originate in the thoracic and lumbar regions o the spinal cord. Most sympathetic preganglionic fibers are very short, synapsing with the sympathetic ganglion chain.
