60 views10 pages

Document Summary

In vast majority of people the areas responsible for language are found on the left hemisphere. However if a child under two damages the left hemisphere language can be transferred to the right hemisphere. Infants can articulate the entire range of speech sounds, but as they mature they often lose the ability to distinguish between or express speech sounds. Language involves the integration of expression (speaking ability) and comprehension. Each has a specific region in the cortex. Left frontal lobe in close association with the motor cortex that control the muscles necessary for articulation. Left cortex at the junction of the parietal, temporal and occipital lobes. Receives input from the visual cortex in the occipital lobe. Motor, sensory and language areas account for only about half of the total cerebral cortex, the remaining areas called association areas are involved in higher functions. Lies at the interface of the three loves for which it is named.
