Instinct: a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned. Based on darwinian theory: random variation, followed by selection. Not just a reflex reaction, an instinct can be very complex. Unlearned (automatic, irresistible, triggered by some event, etc. Certain human behaviors are innate and due to evolutionary programming: (cid:862)dri(cid:448)e(cid:863) a(cid:374)d i(cid:374)(cid:272)e(cid:374)ti(cid:448)e theories. Homeostasis: the tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state. Push to reduce drives to get back to a steady physiology state. Incentives: positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior. When drives push and incentives pull are in the same direction, the motivation is strong. When in conflict, motivation is weaker: arousal theories.
