What roles do theories play in the research process? organize information gathered from scientific studies guide researchers to the important questions that need to be examined net. How do researchers ensure objectivity in their study of children? focus on behaviours that are directly observable. Must be able to measure what is observable: ability to define and describe everything in study is quantifiable. Presence of observers may alter behaviours: structured by researchers. Experiences might not occur in a natural environment. May not be able to be generalized for other environments: talking with children or people knowledgeable about the child"s. Case study method: single individual, concerned with clinical issues, difficult to draw conclusions. May not be ethical to switch independent variable observe effects of the dependent variable determine cause-effect relationships between 2 variables: then use quasi-experimental method.
