Chapter 5 physical development: birth, motor skills, growth. Perinatal period begins w birth: birth @ 38 weeks, birth lasts about 16 hrs (1st child, fetus initiates birth process by secreting chemical messages that induce rhythmic contractions of the uterus. 3 stages of birth process: uterine dilation, fetus passes thru the cervix, delivery of the placenta and other membranes. 1st and longest stage of labour begins when early contractions start to dilate or widen the cervical opening. Stage ends when cervix is fully dilated to about 10cm or 4 inches. Contractions are intense, occurring every 2-3 mins. 2nd stage: when fetus starts to pass thru cervix, ends when baby is: contractions long and closely spaced, mother encouraged to. 3rd stage: only a few mins, involves delivery of placenta and relate push w each contraction completely delivered membranes referred to as the after birth (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1)
