Article 13 the many me"s of the self-monitor. Each of us, it appears, may have not one but many selves. Impression management: the strategies and techniques people use to control the impressions they convey to others. Low self-monitoring individuals tend to express what they feel, rather than mold and tailor their behaviour to fit the situation. High self monitoring individuals can detect the level of impression management in others as well. Nonverbal behaviour can betray the attitude of those attempting impression management. Another way prejudice can be revealed is in the physical distance people keep between themselves and their prejudice. It often can take as much work to present a truthful image as to present a deceptive one. High self monitoring orientation may be purchased at the cost of having ones action reflect and communicate very little about ones private attitudes, feelings and dispositions.
