Continuous: a process gradually augmenting the same type of skills that were there to begin with (smooth/continuous) Discontinuous: process where new ways of understanding & responding to world emerge at specific times. Stages (discontinuous): qualitative changes in thinking, feeling, behaving that categorize specific periods of development.
