Neurons are very small but can be seen under a microscope. Characteristics and functions of a cell can be determined by its" proteins. Chemistry review: molecules are the basic foundation of everything, an element cannot be broken down any further, elements make up molecules, an atom is the smallest structure. It is neutral but can attain charges (add electrons, become negative, take away electrons, becomes positive: molecules form bonds between ions (eg nacl aka table salt) H2o is polar, which means one side is positive and one side is negative giving it a bent shape. Cell membrane: separates and regulates intracellular and extracellular uid (they have different chemical solutions) if these are out of whack, the cell will not function properly, phospholipids: are what conduct the above. Phospholipids are made up of phosphorus p (the head) and two lipid molecules (the tails made up of hydrogen and carbon [h+c]) The head is polar and the tails are non polar.
