Flirtation: used to pass the time, nd out if they can still stir interest in another person, communicate sexual interest. Has considerable ambiguity which can protect self image if you get rejected. For example, if someone turns you down after a considerable amount of irting. Women tend to use the full arsenal of gaze, ouch, facial expressions, and grooming, whereas men just use touch. When women are not interested in pursuing a romantic encounter, they tend to deescalate their irtatious behaviour early in the interaction while men take longer to deescalate. The ultimate goal is to elicit liking from another person. Creating a desired impression rather than a revelation of one"s true self. Instead of lying goffman (1959) described it as the over communication of some facts and the under communication of others. Leary (1995) described tactics which people use in self disclosure (p. 75) Context is also important in our self presentation and impressions.
