PSY 3103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Stimulus Control, Toothache, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
Reminder from chapter 2 (pavlovian conditioning): us ur, cs cr. Uss and css are antecedent stimuli that appear before and elicit reflexive responses indicated above. This is sr (stimulus-response) model of behavior, in which an antecedent stimulus (us or cs) elicits a reflexive response. Sdeltas = inhibit relevant behavior: when operants are extinguished or punished, the discriminative stimuli associated with extinction or punishment sdeltas. The ability of any stimulus in the stimulus collage (life/world/environment) to influence behavior depends on: an individual"s past conditioning (or lack of) with the stimulus and similar stimuli. Past conditioning can cause any stimulus (even faint ones) to have a significant influence over behavior. If the baby was in the same room as the mother, early signs of distress would have been more salient more noticeable to the mother. Stimuli that are nearby and salient tend to affect behavior more than distant stimuli: the presence of other stimuli that evoke facilitative or competing responses.
