Assessment techniques must fit three requirements: reliability is the degree to which a measurement is consistent. Test retest: validity is whether something actually measures what it is designed to measure. Concurrent/descriptive validity is comparison of test results to that of a more known test. Predictive is how well the assessment tells what will happen in the future: standardization is the process by which a certain set of standards is determined for a technique to make its use consistent across a different measurements. Clinical interview: gather info on behaviour, attitudes, emotions, semistructured interviews are made of questions that are carefully phrased and tested to elicit useful information in a consistent manner. Can depart from questions to follow up on specific issues. Mental status exam involves systematic observation of one"s behaviour to determine if a disorder might be present: can be done while interviewing the patient, appearance and behaviour, thought processes. Hallucinations, delusions, speech speed, etc: mood and affect.
