Observation by self or others: diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities most of the day, nearly every day, significant weight loss or weight gain or decrease/increase in appetite nearly every day. The physical changes of this disorder are sometimes called somatic or vegetative symptoms. If two or months go by between episodes, mdd is said to be recurrent: average is 4-7 episodes, higher chance of relapse the more episodes one has had. Onset between 25-29 but seems to be decreasing. May be few symptoms than mdd but depression remains relatively unchanged over long periods of time: sometimes 20 to 30 years, average length in adults is 5 years. Depressed mood for most of the day, more days than not. Presence of two or more of the following: poor appetite or overeating. Insomnia or hypersomnia: low energy or fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration or difficulty making decisions, feelings of hopelessness.
