Document Summary

A substance is any chemical that alters mood or behaviour. Use is the ingestion of a substance without significant interference with social, educational, or occupational functioning: a coffee every morning, a beer after work. Intoxication is a physiological reaction to ingested substances. Dependence is usually described as addiction: physiological dependence has 2 criteria. Tolerance is when people must take more of the drug to experience the same effect. Withdrawal is when negative physical reactions occur when the drug is removed: psychological dependence is measured by drug seeking behaviour. Repeated use of a drug despite the need to ingest more, and against all odds. Likelihood to resume use after a period of abstinence. Diagnostic issues: high comorbidity with anxiety, mood disorders. Withdrawal symptoms can create psychosis, depression, and anxiety. If symptoms are seen from another psychological disorder within 6 weeks after withdrawal from a substance, they are not considered signs of that disorder. Passed six weeks, other disorders can be considered.
