Appraisal delay: amount of time it takes for person to realize they are ill. Behavioral delay: time between deciding you will be making an appointment, and actually making the appointment. Medical delay: time between making the appointment and the appointment. Least delay people that are in the most pain. Delay is significantly longer for people with other problems (ex: marital, work, etc. High and low levels of fear causes problems. May not think seeking medical treatment is important. Have other people and things going on in your life. Fear rejection, abandonment by friends or partner. High user fee (common in private systems). People from visible minorities = lower levels of healthcare use. Belief in discrimination = decreased utilization of healthcare use. Adherence: degree to which patients carry out the treatments their professionals suggest. Not taking right amount or at right time. Creative non-adherence: patient"s intentionally modifying or supplementing recommended treatment regime.
