Document Summary

Ethnography: a researcher is immersed in a group of people for an extended period of time. Listening to what subjects say in conversation to one another. Ask questions through gathering documents and doing interviews. One of the most dif cult steps in ethnography is getting access to the social setting one wants to research. Depends if the place is restricted or public. One way to ease the problem is to assume a covert role and not tell anyone you are a researcher. Some ethnographers may move between covert and overt roles. Retrospective ethnography: using observations that were gathered before the decision was made to conduct a study. Preferred choice is an overt role due to practical and ethical considerations. Get someone in the organization to vouch for you. Provide a clear explanation of your aims and methods. Paying attention to the way you dress and act. Group members may worry their words will get out and be heard elsewhere.
