One way to conceptualize a crime is to emphasize it"s rule breaking qualities. The rules being the norms we have set for us. Deviance is known as breaking a norm. Crime is breaking a law ( a norm written down because it is deemed very important) Crimes are regulated by the criminal justice system. Examples of criminal justice system: police, judges, prison etc. Most norms today though are not enforced with the criminal justice system but are dealt with among peers. Examples: cutting in line means you receive dirty looks and perhaps someone saying something about how rude it is to do that. Example: murder of a small child vs soft drug use the murder is worst. Consensus crime are things such as homicide and violent sexuality assault that are mala in se which means evil in itself. Conflict crime involve intrprsonal violence agression but people disagree over how bad it is. Social stigma have damaged reputation among people.
