Considers natural state (how people were people were before social structures like gov. ) People moivated by self-interest & since what they wanted could not always be atained, they had collaboraive agreements/social contracts to help each other & to avoid war/conlict (became government) People create social world around them and people are not controlled by god. God responsible for emergence of society & government. Only knowledge people have is through experience as they are born as blank slates. God granted certain rights to people this later became foundaion of dec. of ind. Government used to preserve individual rights to maintain property. Republic (democracy & aristocracy (virtue)), monarchy (honour), & despoism (fear). Ideal types the type that is closest to perfect. Thought a perfect society would mirror our natural state. People moved beyond natural state to work collecively to meet needs (hunger). People entered into social contract by choice, for mutual beneits & protecion.
