Document Summary

Discovery of dna: dna contains genetic code/instruction to build organisms and ability to repli(cid:272)ate a(cid:272)ross ge(cid:374)eratio(cid:374). Friedrich miescher discovered nuclein, gregor mendel discovered genes using pea plants. What is dna made of: nuclein was composed of nucleotides, 1919 phoebus levene proved that nucleotides were composed of a phosphate-sugar- base complex and proposed (cid:862)pol(cid:455)(cid:374)u(cid:272)leotide(cid:863) model for dna. In this model, dna is composed of a series of nucleotides, each one composed of 1 of 4 nitrogen-containing bases, combined with sugar molecule and a phosphate group. Unit 3: molecular genetics: cycle of injection/viral growth and release= lytic cycle, to prove that dna was only involved and not protein, they said that protein contain sulphur but no phosphorus and dna contains phosphorus and no sulphur. So the(cid:455) used radioa(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e (cid:862)taggi(cid:374)g(cid:863) isotopes of ulphur a(cid:374)d p to tra(cid:272)k. Dna/protein: used radioisotopes 32p and 35s, radiation given off can be tracked and measured in the form of light.
