Document Summary

Our understanding for diversity of life has had 4 revolutions: 1950s = whittaker developed the 5 kingdoms bacteria, fungi, protists, plants, animals. 1970s = woese developed his on genotype for preciseness, used molecular chronometer and developed tree of life (archaea, bacteria, eukarya) by using rrna sequence (genotype) Molecular chronometer measures change to describe phylogeny. Reveals relationships between organisms, it shows changes in sequences (that are caused by mutation) The amount of sequence change between 2 lineages is called sequence divergence. The degree of divergence between 2 lineages shows that rate of which mutations are fixed and the time over which mutations occur. A chronometer must have random mutations, change at a rate that"s equal to evolutionary distance, have information that allows for distinctions to be made (while also maintaining stability) A chronometer should present in everything, have aspects that change slowly and have aspects that are prone to change.
