Document Summary

A culture in which citizens are not just media consumers but also media producers, usually through social media. Such users of media are sometimes referred to as prosumers . The ability of electronic communication networks to foster collaboration in the production of media has been evident for more than a century. In the analogue media era, community media often meant a community cable channel or radio station, but bearing nearly the same weight of equipment and expertise to operate it as a commercial station. The computer era has reduced those costs dramatically and in the process has enabled an enormous outpouring and sharing of media works by profession and non-professional users. Human beings are social creatures and we exist in a vast array of social networks. The first electronic networks, telegraph and telephone, provided important enhancements to those social networks by speeding up and extending connection reach.
