Plate Tectonics
2 options:
1. Intraplate: Middle of the plate
- Geologically quiet ; volcanoes and earthquakes aren’t as dramatic or drastic
- “Hot spots” ex. Hawaii
2. Plate boundaries:
Divergent (plates moving apart)
- New crust is created: Oceanic (mid-Atlantic ridge) or Continental (East
Africa rift)
- Can be Ocean-ocean or Continent-continent
Convergent (moving together)
- Crust is consumed or compressed:
Ocean-ocean subduction zone (ex; Japan)
Continent-continent collision zone (ex; Himalayas)
Ocean-continent subduction zone (ex; Andes)
