What is a fingerprint: an impression left on a surface by the ridges- called friction ridges- of the skin on the fingers. In ink and on livescan, as in rolled ten prints taken when an offender is booked. In other materials- fingerprint secretion (sweat), dirt, blood, paint etc, left at crime scenes. Ridgeology: the study of the uniqueness of friction ridge structures ad their use for person identification. 6 wks: hand is a apddel-like form volar pads (little pads of fat) can be seen. *each ridge has single row of pores: openings for sweat glands ducts, release sweat onto surface of skin, touch surface sweat and oils left. *epidermis- thin outer layer: epidermis is attached to the dermis to by a double row of dermal papillae- little skin pegs, damage to the epidermis will heal with little or no effect on the fingerprint pattern.
