Although the psychological contract has become the focus for a body of research, it retains a number of conceptual and empirical problems and challenges. This paper reviews some of the main problems associated with the construct and with the way in which it has been studied. A set of unwritten reciprocal expectations between an individual employee and the organization . Arnold (1996) raises the question of whether everyone in employment has a psychological contract. As we know, all employment contracts have gaps in them. If so, it is surely too broad to be useful. Despite the many problems with the way in which the concept has been developed to date, there is a case for taking the psychological contact seriously. Three main reasons will be outlined, all at a level of policy rather than theory. The rst reason for taking it seriously relates to the analysis of why it has come to the fore in the past decade.
