Document Summary

The phenomenon of children simultaneously acquiring two languages is generally investigated in the field known as bilingualism (which may be thought of as a subdiscipline of sla research) Linguistics became concerned with the mental grammar of the speaker in the 60s. The fields that are crucial to the study of sla are psych, linguistics and fla research. Linguistics gives us an accurate description of what people are trying to learn (the second language), and what they already know (the first language) Psychology gives us with a learning theory to account for how people acquire knowledge and fla offers findings that can productively be applied to sla. Example: children who are acquiring their first language have systematic grammars and their utterances aren"t just bad imitations of the adult target. Sll have a systematic interlanguage (il) grammar, as it is a system of mental representations influenced by the first and the second language and has features of each.
