LIN102H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Special Senses, Affix
Document Summary
An affix that is attached to the front of its based is called a prefix, whereas an affix that is attached to the end of its based is termed a suffix. Some examples of prefixes and suffixes are: de-activate, re-play, il-legal, faith-ful, govern-ment, kind-ness. There are also less common things called infixes; a type of affix that occurs within another morpheme. To be an infix, an affix must occur inside another morpheme; bili (base) = buy and the infixed form = b-in-ili = bought. The majoritiy of complex words in english are built from roots that are free morphemes. N the words re-do and treat-ment for example, the root (do and treat) can itself be used as a word. In japanese and spanish, verbal roots are always bound and can thus not stand alone; camin is not a word and arui is not a word; For ex: in spanish: camin-o (walk), escuch-o (listen) & limpi-o (wipe)
