In the us, there are 4 main types of interpersonal space used. Intimate space: reserved for emotionally close people. Personal space: for close friends and colleagues. Can also be referred to as vocalics. Relates to the nonverbal messages of the voice that contributes to meaning in verbal communication, as long as sounds transmit messages. Concerns the study of vocal cues, the non-phonemic qualities of language that convey meaning in verbal communication, such as: May vary across cultures and may convey emotion or attitude. Conversational volumes (speaking loudly for example) may be seen as aggressive, while for others it"s considered a norm of speech.
