Document Summary
For example, when you form a memory code for a word, you might emphasize how it looks, how it sounds, or what it means. Storage involves maintaining encoded information in memory over time. Storage is analogous to saving data in a file on your computer. Psychologists have focused much of their memory research on trying to identify just what factors help or hinder memory storage. Information storage isn"t enough to guarantee that you"ll remember something. You need to be able to get information out of storage. Retrieval is analogous to calling up a file and then displaying it on your computer monitor. Selective attention is critical to everyday functioning: attention is often likened to a filter that screens out most potential stimuli while allowing a select few to pass through into conscious awareness. However, a great deal of debate has been devoted to where the filter is located in the information-processing system.
