Document Summary
Chapter 8: cognitive development piaget and vygotsky. Cognition: the mental activity through which human beings acquire and process knowledge. Piaget relied on two methods: observation(w very young kids since they cant speak- watched kid as they tried to solve it) and interview (show kid a problem and ask their thinking) Piaget"s main tenet: the child actively seeks knowledge. Piaget said children play an active role in acquiring knowledge. Behaviourism said they play a more passive role (waiting for information in their environment) Constructivist view: the idea that children actively create their understanding of the world as they encounter new information & have new experiences (children try to fit new info into their knowledge) *** piaget"s theory is constructivist. Piaget interested in knowledge about the logical properties of the world & how objects work. Children vary in the timings that these developmental achievements occur so he gave approximate ages.
