Piaget worked with alfred binet first intelligence test (iq) Piaget made 2 observations while working on the test: children of same age tend to get same answers wrong, errors of children of a particular age differed from answers of older and younger children. Relied on interviews and observations to study children"s thinking. Piaget proposed from studies that over development, children acquire qualitatively new ways of thinking and understanding the world. Human cognition develops through changes in the way children approach problems. Constructivist view: children actively create their understanding of the world as they encounter new information and have new experiences. Infants have mental structures called cognitive schemes. Schemes: organized unit of knowledge that the child uses to try to understand a situation. Form basis for organizing actions to respond to environment. Schemes mostly involve reflexes such as sucking and rooting. Schemes get more sophisticated as motor capabilities advance.
