Document Summary
Motives are needs, wants, interests, and desires that propel people into certain directions (to achieve important goals) Ex: if you go without food for a while, you begin to feel discomfort (hunger). The internal tension (drive) motivates you to obtain food. Eating reduces that drive and restores physiological equilibrium: although very influential, drive theories cannot explain all motivation, since drive theories assume that people are always trying to reduce internal tension, they cannot explain behavior very well. The source of motivation lies within the organism: incentive theories emphasize how external stimuli pull people into certain directions. Expectancy about one"s chances of attaining the incentive. Ex: your motivation of pursuing a promotion will depend on your estimated chance of success (expectancy) and how appealing the promotion is (value). Ex: dominance is greater in males than females because it facilitates males" reproductive success via: Dominant males may poach females from subordinate males. Dominant males may intimidate rivals into completion for sexual access.
