Document Summary

Delay and deniker decided to give chlorpromazine to hospitalized schizophrenic clients. Chlorpromazine became the first effective antipsychotic drug. Biomedical therapies are physiological interventions to reduce symptoms associated with psychological disorders; these therapies assume that psychological disorders are caused by biological malfunctions. Psychosurgery was used by the greeks and romans and throughout the medieval period, modern use dates from 1888 when swiss psychiatrist gottleib burckhardt removed portions of the cortex of six psychotic patients as a treatment for hallucinations. Antonia egas moniz developed the prefrontal leucotomy, which was modified and popularized by walter freeman in the 1940s. The last lobotomies were performed by dr. kenneth livingstone at the clarke institute for psychiatry in 1981. Psychopharmacotherapy is the treatment of mental disorders with medication; this can simply be referred to as drug therapy. The four categories of therapeutic drugs for psychological problems are 1) antianxiety drugs, 2) antipsychotic drugs, 3) antidepressant drugs and 4) mood-stabilizing drugs.
