Denotation is dictionary meaning and connotation incudes emotional overtones. Syntax: is a system of rules that specify how words can be arranged into sentences. 3-month-old infants can distinguish phonemes from all worlds" languages but this skill disappears between 4-12 months. By 18 months, can say 3-50 words. Receptive vocab (understanding) is larger than their productive vocab. First words tent to be objects, and then actions.
