Chapters 15 and 16: personality and neurocognitive disorders. Odd-eccentric personality disorders (cluster a: paranoid: pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others, schizoid: pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of emotional expression, schizotypal: characterized by odd beliefs and behaviours (eg. magical thinking) Dramatic emotional personality disorders (cluster b: antisocial: signs of psychopathy, emotional detachment, lack of empathy, and impulsive behaviour and callousness. May be caused by lack of prefrontal lobe development during a critical period. Impairment in the ability to form positive relationships. Tendency to engage in behaviours violating basic norms and values. Poor impulse control; little tolerance for frustration; easily bored; risk takers with little concern for danger. Although there is overlap, a diagnosis of apd is not the same as a diagnosis of psychopathy (ie. being a psychopath) Although psychopathy is a meaningful construct for many psychologists, it is not even a dsm diagnostic category. Genetic predisposition- 50% concordance rate for mz twins.
