PSY290H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Coolidge Effect, Behavioral Neuroscience, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Hebb played a key role in the emergence of biopsychology. 1. 3 types of research to characterize the biopsychological approach: Biopsychological research varies as follows: human and nonhuman subjects: Humans have several advantages: follow instructions, report their subjective experiences, experiments are cheaper, and they have a human brain (purpose of study) The differences between the brains of humans and other species are more quantitative than qualitative, thus many of human brain functions can be clarified by the study of nonhumans. Experimentation is the method used by scientists to study causation. If a different group of subjects is tested under each condition it is called between-subjects design. If it is the same group of subjects tested under each condition it is called within-subject designs. Confounded variables: unintended variable that may have caused the difference in the dependent variable in the conditions; often lead to observed effects that are wrong, or not due to the variable intended.
