Document Summary

Memory involves 3 stages: encoding storage retrieval; note that code doesn"t equal to encoding, coding means structure. You encode to put it in a code. Encoding: the process of acquiring informaion and transferring it into memory. Retrieval: the process of remembering info that has been stored in ltm. Rxn ime will be shorter when the target is present than absent: self terminaion. Rxn ime for present and absent trials was approx. the same. 2 theories of forgeing from stm: decay and interference. Retroacive interference: inhibitory efects of new informaion on old informaion. Proacive interference: inhibitory efect of old informaion on new informaion. They can"t be rehearsed enough so they don"t get transferred to ltm. They occurred too long ago to sill be acive in stm. Item at beginning are only afected by retroacive interference. Items at end are only afected by proacive interference. Item in the middle are afected by both retroacive and proacive interference.
