Paradigm : set of basic assumption which define and conceptualize a subject. It specify what problem will scientist will investigate. Paradigms indicates the rules which needs to be followed in a scientific study. It can be biased based on data collected. Four major types of paradigms : biological, cognitive behavioral, psycho-analytic, humanistic. Main idea : mental disorders are caused by abnormal psychological process. Biological process is disrupted and not functioning normally. Three areas of research with in the medical disease model : behaviour genetics: is the study of individual differences in behavior that is due to differences in genetic makeup. Genotype : unobservable genetic part of an ind. Genes are fixed at birth but its not static. Meaning gene expression can vary depending on the environment. (on/off) Example : ind may be born with high capacity for iq but high iq is dependent on education and upbringing. Whether genotype stimulate phenotypic behavior s dependent on the environment and experience.
