Document Summary

In the 17th-19th century, youth who committed crimes were treated as adults: they were put in the same facilities, had the same penalties, even regarding the death penalty. Criticism of the yoa: serious crimes get light sentences, minimum responsibility age raised from 7 to 12. Under the ycja the name of youth cannot be reported to the public, but only released under special circumstances: violent offences (14-17), sexual assault, dangerous offenders. The total number of crimes committed by youth has been decreasing for the past few years. As well as the number of violent offences probation is the most common sentence to youth in youth court. Assessing the adolescent: risk is checked, using risk-assessment instruments, difference between risk assessment in adults and youths is criminal history, youth tend to have short or no history which makes risk assessment difficult. Biological theories: frontal lobe functioning, responsible for planning and inhibiting behaviour. Individuals with cd have less frontal lobe inhibition.
