Document Summary

All information is straight from the textbook, soc+, written by brym and lie. Chapter 6: social stratification is the way society is organized in layers or strata. Individual-level explanations focus on the attributes of people who are poor, asking how thse people differ from people who are not poor: looking at personal attributes. Inequality is known to exist in all societies. Marx"s conflict theory: marx believes that social stratification and the accompany conflict between classes are not inevitable, he believed that capitalist growth would eventually produce a society without classes and therefore without class conflict. Social mobility: social mobility refers to the dynamics of the system of inequality and, in particular, to movement up and down the stratification system. Intragenerational mobility is social mobility that occurs within a single generation. Intergenerational mobility is social mobility that occurs between generations. In open societies, you are more likely to rise or fall to a position that reflects your capabilities.
