Functionalism: functionalism, a sociological school of thought that stresses how human behavior is governed by social structures that are based mainly on shared values and that contribute to social stability. The ruling class derives its power from its ownership and control of the forces of production. The ruling class exploits and oppresses the subject class. Simpler terms: symbolic interaction theory analyzes society by addressing the subjective meanings that people impose on objects, events, and behaviors: patriarchy, the system of male domination of woman. The sociological imagination: patterns of social relations affect your innermost thoughts and feelings, influence your actions, and help shape who you are, social structures, stable patterns of social relations, four levels of social structure, microstructures.
