Week 5-SOC 244 notes CHAPTER 7 “COUPLE FORMATION AND SEXUAL RELATIONS”
DATING
Heterosexual: kids are taught young about couples, women invest more emotions and time into a
relationship than men do, because of Gender Roles. Women taught to rely on men
Same-Sex: stigmatized. Not much research, Internet Dating: has increased
DATE AND PARTNER SELECTION
-Propinquity: physical proximity, how youth choose their dates. From school, neighbourhood etc
-assortative mating: start to be selective and choosing partner on basis of certain traits
-homogamy: when two people choose each other on the basis of some elements of similarity such as
interests, values, lifestyle. Functional and exchange theory-because they have things they can do
together, it makes their “we-ness” and companionship stronger.
-endogamy: people date, live together or marry within their own status or group, or social stats.
-Race and Ethnicity are first considered when selecting a partner: “Marriage squeeze: black men
choosing white women over black women—leaving black women single and angry”
ROMANTIC LOVE
-“need to be in love to marry” is a social construction, that doesn’t exist internationally. romantic love,
courtly love started in middle ages. Not a new phenomenon
COHABITION
-common law in Canada, after 1-3 years living together, couples are protected/given same treatment as
married couples in terms of health insurance
- Less role demands(less division of labour) because it’s less institutionalized, easier to dissolve. Are less
faithful, less committed, think they are always “available” for a new relationship compared to married
couples.
Social Selection or Causation?
-selection into marriage for the healthiest individuals, so mentally, uneducated, socially awk, ppl are not
selected to get married. Even if they do, their marriages do not last long
-causation explains the differences in well being between the married and the non-married
-marriages help people be responsible, happy, gain self-esteem, stabilize personalities, psychological
and physical happiness and health as live longer
