Document Summary

Purple pages & lectures 7 & 8: distinguish between and element and a compound. The six elements are hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulphur: define the term "trace element", and give an example. Trace elements are elements required by living organisms in small amounts. 11 trace elements are found in living organisms - sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, Manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, silicon, and chlorine: distinguish among polar covalent, covalent, and ionic bonds. Polar covalent bonds depend on the electro negativity(tendency of an element to attract electrons) of a compound. Polar-covalent molecules are reactive because of the partial charges that form on them, e. g. water is a polar covalent molecule, with oxygen being the more electronegative, and thus acquiring a partial negative charge. A non-polar covalent molecules, or covalent molecules, are not reactive (electronegativity is similar (~equal)). In a non-polar covalent bond, the sharing of electrons is equal.
