Document Summary
Interactions with other species play key roles in distribution and abundance of pops, often narrowing their realized niches. All interactions combine costs (resources) and bene ts (increases in reproduction) Direct interactions species physically interact; e. g. plants and pollinators. Indirect interactions in uence one another through competition for a shared resource. In many, bene ts are one-sided one organism consumes the other or competes with it for a resource. In many pops, the tension between intrinsic growth rate and environmental carrying capacity results in intraspeci c competition competition between a single species. Interspeci c competition between individuals of diff species. Competitive exclusion can prevent two species from occupying the same niche at the same time. Competitive exclusion competition between 2 species prevents one from occupying a particular niche; reduces realized niche size. Sometimes during overlap, competitive exclusion doesn"t happen because the pop sizes of both species aren"t big enough to reduce the amount of resources available.
