Our actions affect the world around us directly and indirectly. Scienti c insight, technical ingenuity, and a wise citizenship are our best hope to conserve our natural world while keeping hard-won gains in food, energy, and health. Anthropocene period the modern era, named to re ect the dominant impact of humans on earth. Our impact is partly because of the large number of people, which drives our energy and land use and re ects the individual and societal choices we make. Humans are a major force on the planet. Our pops keep increasing and will continue to do so, maybe even up to 9 billion.
