Behaviour and Behavioural Ecology
Ethology: Study of animal behaviour from an evolutionary prospective.
Niko Timbergen discovered the idea of Ethology, he asked and answered the
question why?
Proximate: mechanisms, the HOW
Ultimate: causes, the WHY
Scientists use many ways to see why organisms do what they do, for
example:
Deprivation Experiments: what is genetically coded and what is learned from
the environment
Genetic Experiments: selective and inter breeding, gene knockouts
Genetic control does not have the external environment to rely on, not as
flexible.
Learning from the environment is more flexible, but it is vulnerable to
making mistakes or incorrect info.
Even genetically controlled behaviours arent always hard wired; sometimes
they need a cue to start certain behaviours.
Releaser: an object, or condition required to elicit behaviour.
Environmental control is always good to have because the environment is
always changing and therefore we can learn on the go.
Food Choice is a very important behavioural response that directly effects
animals fitness
Animals can get essential minerals, can stay away from toxins, and consume
the antimicrobial properties, also calories.
The foraging theory helps ecologists understand survival value of food
choices.
Animals make choices among available prey n order to maximize the rate of
energy intake.
